Kyles Kottage, Monday Aug 24 to August 30th

Monday morning ... it rained overnight. Heard it at 4:20 am. Of course boat cover was off as there was not any rain in the forecast! Oh well, it will dry out today.

Kat sent some new pictures of Stella. She is now 100 days old and boy is she growing.

Monday turned out to be beautiful for most of the day. Ironing day for me and Ray worked on some of his projects on the go. As we had left the cover off on the boat we decided to let it dry out so did not go fishing. The afternoon was spent out on the deck and the dock. Another great day at the lake.

Not a bad view while ironing. lol

Tuesday started out a little foggy but by 8 am the fog had burned off and it was another beautiful sunny morning. No fishing today as the fridge repair guy should be here between 10am and 2pm. Wish they could get a little more specific! Oh well. There is always stuff to do when you have a house. The temps are supposed to get up to 23C today so we will probably spend the afternoon on the dock. The water temps this year have only warmed up to 20C/70F, so a little cool to go for a dip unless it is really hot out.

Alex did not arrive until 2:20 pm. Talk about wasting our day ... He pulled out the fridge and then replaced the computer board, the brain box....

The brains of the fridge!

Once that was done he fired up the fridge .... nada.... still not working .... compressor won't come online! Now after 30 minutes of testing everything it was determined that the inverter to the compressor has been fried, literally. Has some burned marks. So now we wait again to see what Comerco (extended warranty people) will do about this. No fridge again for at least a week or more! I will have to wait a couple of days to see what Comerco will do now.

Ray called Home Depot to complain about the extended warranty people and they told him that their contract with Comerco was not being renewed.  We assume they were unhappy with their customer care. A little late for us though!

Wednesday, a gorgeous day. Ray and I headed down to Duncan with the utility trailer to pick up a box spring mattress I had ordered from The Brick for Jason and Kristi's bed downstairs. They are finding the bed too soft so this should fix the situation, I hope.

Back home by 11 to enjoy the day. After lunch I decided to go for a ride in my kayak while Ray worked on leveling some more of the deck tiles on the sundeck. By 2 pm we headed down to the dock and even had  a swim. Today was one of the few days that there was no wind all day and the temps were at 25C.

Robyn and Amalia came over so Amalia could play in the water. Gave my lounger to play in. What a cutie. As usual Ray and I keep our distance and sit on the dock. Only a few more days for Robyn's husband Korey to quarantine and then we can get closer. :)

After they left it was time for me to give Freya a bath before dinner. She gets so smelly from all the swimming she does. She smells much better now. :) at least for a few days.

Thursday morning Jason arrived about 8:30 am to give Ray a hand straightening some rocks for our beach access that have moved due to the high water last winter. Ray of course cut himself and I had to bandage him up ...After lunch we spent the rest of the afternoon down at the dock.

Thursday morning I received an email from Comerco that they will credit me the $$ for a new fridge and to contact Home Depot. Friday morning I was at Home Depot at 8:30 am... they are willing to help me as much as they can so hopefully I won't need to pay any more money hopefully. Bad side is I won't get the fridge until beginning of November due to Covid supply issues!

While I was gone the boys had a late start and went out fishing but were skunked.

Spent the day mostly relaxing ... well the boys did, as they were stiff from moving rocks yesterday.  Although Jason put another coat of linseed oil on the top of the deck boxes as they were already fading due to the sun.

I spent the day preparing for Friday and Saturday nights dishes for dinner, then we all sat down at the dock. I noticed there was a boat out there that people were paddling instead of motoring. The boys went out and rescued them, towing them back to the boat launch. The people were quite thankful. Unfortunately, Jason stepped on a bolt from the downrigger bracket climbing into the boat so he was bandaged up when he got back.

Off to the rescue.

Jason also managed to get slivers in his feet from the dock so I had to get them out too. Kristi had to get the deepest one out though as I couldn't seem to get it when she arrived later. He asked me first because he says she is to rough. lol

Kristi and Jason's fishing buddy Jeorge, arrived at 4:30 ish. We all sat on the sundeck and visited while I did the last bit of cooking of the back ribs. While sitting on the sundeck Kristi noticed that the dock was on fire literally .... Jason and Kristi jumped into action and put it out with water from the dog's water bucket. Apparently Ray threw the cloth that he was using to wipe the linseed oil and paint thinner combo bubbles off the deck boxes and put it on the tarp expecting to use it again but forgot. The sun ignited the fumes on the cloth. Wow we were lucky that we all were watching it. Now Ray, Jason and Jason's stepdad Dale are all investing in metal pails with lids to put cloths in so this does not happen again to any of them. :) Jason also managed to cut his big toe running down to the dock ... more bandages. :)

The arrow marks the spot, luckily only burned a small spot and not Ray's deck box!

My ribs, baked beans and coleslaw turned out well and everyone stuffed themselves. Jorge brought a fabulous homemade blueberry pie for dessert. Lots of laughs, lots of wine (Jorge brought lots) and great food made for a wonderful evening.

Kristi, Jason and Jeorge

Saturday morning the boys and Jorge went out fishing. Jeorge managed to catch a great fish but it had lesions on it from the Lamprey Eels so they did not keep it.

Jeorge prepared a lunch for all of us to eat down at the dock.

What a spread!

Another great day down on the dock. It was a bit chilly in the shade.

Tonight's dinner was barbecued whole chickens (2). I had made the potato salad in the morning and we just had to add corn on the cob as well as the coleslaw from yesterday. Jason received a call from friends of theirs around 4pm. They were stuck in traffic in Chemainus due to a 3 car crash that had Highway 1 closed since this morning. Ross and Layla with their 3 month old daughter Nova, came here instead to wait, until the highway opens. Hard to stay in a car with a small baby for hours..... Ross and Layla are the only other people in Kristi and Jason's "bubble" so it was fine for them to come here. Kristi joked her whole bubble was here at the lake.

Needless to say I was glad I had cooked 2 chickens as there was not much left after everyone had their fill. :) A great evening. We did not get to visit very much with them as it was Nova's fussy time so they were downstairs in Kristi and Jason's area to feed, change her etc. At 7 pm they headed home as the highway was finally opened.

Sunday morning the fishers left early with fog still wafting on the water at 6:30 am.... did not change their luck though as they came back at 9:45 empty handed but big smiles on their faces. It definitely was much cooler out there this morning.

I made french toast and bacon for breakfast. Jason and Jeorge and Ray did all the dishes ... mostly Jason, what a sweetheart.

After breakfast we all went down to the dock for a while to enjoy the sun as the weather is changing later today. Spent a couple of hours down there before the wind was up and the sun was gone. Time for barbecued hamburgers for lunch. Everyone helped with the condiments and cutting up the veg. Once lunch was done and the kitchen cleaned up it was time for Kristi and Jeorge to head back to Nanaimo. Jason will stay overnight to help finish fixing the rocks on the beach for Ray tomorrow.

That was our week. If I did not write this blog and show pictures I am sure nobody would believe us of the things that happen. :) to the Kalamity Kyles!

    1. I know ... those guys! The fridge with the Covid and manufacturer shut downs ... won't get a new fridge until mid November!!! We will manage. We are so much better off than a lot of people with this situation. All the "snowbirds" that usually go south can't so they are all scrambling to find spots in the lower mainland of BC to get rid of the cold temps further east. It certainly will be an interesting winter for most people that are full-timers.

  2. More fun times at Kyle's Kottage! Could do without the accidents, though! Stella is certainly growing!
