Cruising Alaska, Day 5 Glacier Bay

Cruising Day 5, Glacier Bay National Park

This was the highlight of our trip for Ray and I.

Wednesday morning, I woke to the sound of the ships horn at 5:30am. Oh oh, foggy start to going into Glacier Bay. I also woke up having a head cold. I guess I did not sanitize my hands enough or breathed in that lady's cough from "the holding pen". Hopefully no one else in our group gets this. I had ordered a bunch of orange juice, coffee and snacks to the room for all of us to toast Glacier Bay. By 7:30 am the fog had burned off and it turned out to be a beautiful day. The waters were greeny/blue.

Hard to believe it took the ship 4 hours  (65 miles) to cruise up this fiord that was all covered in ice 100 years ago.

Kristi and Jason went for couples’ massage and caught up with us around 9:00 am. Of course at that time we were on the front deck as Ray was out for pictures but we all returned to our balcony to partake in the champagne. It was a lot cooler in the front of the ship compared to our balcony.

Margerie Glacier is the only glacier still growing, all the others are receding.

Approaching Margerie Glacier.

Small Calving of the glacier.

Already 100 years after the glacier has melted new life is starting. The white lump to the right of the tree is a mountain goat. You could see it's horns when you really enlarged the photo from Ray's camera.

The only other cruise ship allowed in the park besides us today. They moved on shortly after this picture for our turn at the view.

Bigger section of ice broke off and splashed.
The ship stopped for an hour in front of the Margerie Glacier and we even got to see it “calve” a few times. At noon we were back on our way down the fiord. We all went for lunch at the Lido Market and then separated to do whatever. Ray and I had Strawberry Daiquiris on the Seaview Pool Deck and enjoyed the sunshine for an hour before laying down for a nap. This cold is winning the battle.
Gala night tonight in the main dining room. We met up with Kristi and Jason at the Pinnacle Bar for a quick cribbage game before dinner.

At 5:30 pm we were all seated at our reserved table in the dining room for Surf and Turf dinner. By 6:30 my cold was quite bad and I could feel a sneezing fit coming on so I departed to our room to keep my germs to myself. I spent the rest of the evening in, watching a movie while the others went to the BB Kings Blues Bar to listen to a few sets. Another fabulous day.

  1. The glaciers are amazing! We took 2 tours when we went up to Alaska and loved them both! Glad the fog lifted and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Sorry that your cold got the better of you tough...that sucks!
