More progress and Kristi comes for the weekend

Friday, another glorious day. Very busy here at Kyle's Kottage. Two electricians are here to hang our new dining room light fixture, but first the existing blade fan had to be removed. (This house did not have any dining room light fixture.) Who would have thought that it would take one guy (Nick) almost all day for that! Unfortunately once the fan was removed, they discovered there wasn't an electrical box installed. The other guy, Adam, spent his time running all the wire for our 50 amp plug for the motorhome and putting in the wiring for extra lights in the garage.

The dining room light fixture did not come with any chain, only wire, so off to Duncan I went to Home Depot to pick up some so no one was just sitting around waiting. I was not expecting this as this fixture was special ordered from McLaren's with the wire lengthened at the factory so why no chain ???? While I was gone, Adam drove back to Duncan to pick up the plug for the 50 amp and new light fixtures for the garage. Nick stayed behind and assembled the upstairs fan for Garrett's room and the light fixture for the living room. Both of these lights were unable to be installed today with the difficulties taking down the fan in the dining room. This dining room fan is to be reinstalled in the foyer above the front door to help move the hot air from the loft area and again, there will have to be wire run and an electrical box installed.

Now that's a ladder Nick!

Adam working on the final assembly.

And Voila!  It does look much better at night though.

In the end the electrical work was not completed ... the only item finished was the dining room light. Another guy will be back on Tuesday to finish.

While I was supervising them doing their thing, we also had Price Alarm here for the day to install another security camera over the front door so the whole driveway will be covered now with 2 cameras instead of only partly with the one previously installed. (We did this because the day after the system was installed a few weeks ago someone came into the yard and stole the top off our concrete Chinese Pagoda and the camera did not "see" the thief"!

Will installing the camera.
Ray was outside on the deck supervising Will and Clay building the stairs to the beach. I was at Home Hardware at 8:15, bright and early to pick up redi-mix concrete as they had used up all that I had previously purchased.

Freya supervising Will and Clay
They managed to get it half done by the end of the day so we had to barricade it off for the rest of the weekend to let the cement dry.

All the trades left at 4pm. Ray and I finally were able to relax and take a swim down at the dock as it was pretty warm at 31C. before Kristi showed up with her 2 dogs for the weekend. I was way too tired today to think about cooking but Kristi had brought her "Chef's Plate" so she cooked us dinner. Thanks a bunch sweetie.

After dinner, Kristi and I sat out on the porch as she had brought stuff to give ourselves a pedicure. Ray retired as his back was pretty sore after bouncing up and down all day checking out the contractor's work. But before that, Kristi's dogs got the brushing to help with their hair loss all over Grandma's floor. lol

Saturday, another sunny hot day. After breakfast and before the wind came up, we all went for a boat ride. Kristi managed to pass her test for the Safe Boating Operator's Card the day before so she was captain for the trip. She piloted the boat fabulously.

We only went down the lake as far as Honeymoon Bay as the wind started up and we did not want it to be too bumpy for Ray's back.

A lovely boat ride. Once back at the house and the dogs walked, it was time to go for lunch at J & V's Burger and Pizza, a very cute diner in Lake Cowichan, Ray ate there before, as had Kristi a year or so ago with Jason. Very cute and eclectic. They even have a caboose you can eat in. With the hot weather the outside of their building has misters going to help with the heat . Inside had great A/C so very nice. They were extremely busy so it was a bit of a wait for our food but we had snagged a booth inside so did not mind the wait.  Good burgers and milkshakes.

Darn bug bites!

Once back, we headed down to the dock and back into the lake for a couple of hours. Kristi and I with our floaty's and Ray just jumped in periodically to cool off. Another hot 30 C day with lots of activity on the lake. At 3pm all of us went inside for a siesta. Kristi was down a few pints of sleep after being on call, I needed to rest my neck and Ray needed to rest his back. After dinner Kristi and I went back on the deck while Ray watched TV in our bedroom. Another fabulous day at Kyle's Cottage.

Sunday, sunny and warm again. Both Ray and I slept in a little to 6:15 am this morning. The temps overnight outside only went down to 15C so pretty hot for anyone without A/C Ray headed down ato our dock at 7:15 to practice his guitar. Kristi still sleeping.

John Mahon comes to visit and It's my birthday!

Sunday, after feeding Martin breakfast, he was on his way to play golf, meeting his son at the club in Duncan. Another warm sunny day. Ray and I spent quite a bit of time on the dock and in the water ... such a hard life. lol

Monday, our gardener Will showed up with a very strong young man, Clayton, to rebuild our rock retaining wall. Some of the rocks sloughed down last winter, so Ray's plan is to reinforce it from the bottom up.  Some of the wall is too steep, so using a bunch of rock already in our yard, he got the guys to lessen the slope. The rock used is from our yard Ray wanted moved anyways.  Smart guy ... killed 2 birds with one stone, or many stones. lol

The before picture

Clayton works at a local rock quarry so is quite used to lifting rocks.

The after picture

Both Will and Clayton worked very hard moving all the rock. Now the rock wall should hold for the next winter. We thought we had tons of rock but they used most of it for this side.  The other side only required a small area to be resloped, so we ended up with just enough. Whew.  The stairs will be redone as well, as some of the rocks are wiggly and we're worried someone might turn an ankle. While Ray was supervising them, I was meeting with the HVAC company regarding getting A/C upstairs to the guest bedrooms. With the vaulted ceilings it positively cooks up there. This company put in the furnace and heat pump 2 years ago.  They'd tried to convince Louise to put A/C up there but she declined. Can't say I blame her for the cost, when she was selling the house anyways. We should have this remedied within a few weeks hopefully.

I spent the morning on the phone with cancelling all the services at my Dad's house as of August 29th when the new owners take over. Also trying to track down the gazebo I purchased last week from Home Depot for our dock. I purchased it through Duncan Home Depot who purchased it from the Victoria Store and arranged for ACE Courier to deliver it here. Somehow it was not picked up for a few days and then was shipped up from Victoria to Duncan and then shipped back to Victoria yesterday without any notice or phone calls, etc. What a bunch of hooey. The Langford store in Victoria is certainly not very customer friendly compared to the Duncan Store. Needless to say I have left it in the hands of Duncan yesterday where I purchased it. So we shall see what happens today. I told them I'm not paying all the shipping back and forth, only the $63 I was quoted.

Ray and I spent most of the afternoon on the deck as we needed to stay out of the way of the rocks and the housekeeper was here for a couple of hours late afternoon. We managed to jump in the lake a couple of times to stay cool as it was a cooker up on the deck.

All in all, another busy day. (Ray sat and supervised from the deck). Ray did take me out to lunch at Jake's on the Lake as it is Monday, seniors day and our food is 25% off.  (Did not want to make a mess in the kitchen with the housekeeper coming ... my excuse anyways. lol)

Tuesday another beautiful morning. Ray even managed to sit down at the dock first thing and play his guitar.

Today Will and Clayton were back to do more rock work. They worked most of the day finishing the rock work and Clay took apart the existing rock stairs. Wade's Irrigation was supposed to start today fixing the irrigation system that was put in so badly. He called me at dinner time apologizing for not coming. He has come down with cellulitis and is now on antibiotics and not able to work for a few days. I guess we are on his list now for next week. Kristi managed to have the day off as she was not busy on call last night and managed to sleep. She came down for the day and went home for dinner. Our good friend John Mahon, arrived at 11 am to stay with us for a couple of days. His wife and friend are in Africa visiting their son and touring. John was unable to go as he is recovering from some surgery. Spoke to Jo Jo at 10pm with John and she is having a blast. Joane was just waking up and we were all just going to bed. lol (Ray had already retired at 9. He is having a lot of pain in his hips currently and having trouble walking.) Most of the day was spent on our deck supervising the guys doing the rock work. Ray and I hopped in and out of the water a few times to stay cool. Once the guys were done for the day at 5, I moved our chairs down to the beach so John could get cooled off with his toes in the water. Great conversation. It was nice catching up.

Wednesday another beautiful day. Ray and I were up at our usual 5:30 am. John still snoozing. Today we have to go to Duncan and see our designer for samples of what to replace the sundeck with. Exciting. The plan is to dismantle it the week of August 27th. Landscaping work continues and Ray has ordered another load of dirt for the guys to move into the back yard which should arrive sometime today. We will leave John to supervise it. :) Actually, John took himself on a tour of the town and brought me back flowers and a card for my birthday tomorrow. Thanks John

On the way back from the appointment we picked up our boat from Monti's Marine and plan to launch it so we have it back at our dock. It will be nice to get out on the water again. Launching it is so easy and only 5 minutes from our dock. With Will here working, I can get him to move the boat trailer back into the garage so it is not too hard for me. Ray will just have to move the motorhome temporarily down the street so I can do this.

Our timing worked out well. We came back home and just parked the boat on the street temporarily waiting for the dirt to arrive. Will was madly clearing out the last of the previous load into the backyard. Here is Will doing the "wine crushing dance", trying to compact the dirt.

The topsoil was delivered an hour and a half early at 12:30 pm. Good thing we were home.

There she blows!

With the dirt delivered and we a bite of lunch, off we went and launched the boat. I dropped Ray and John off with the boat after it was launched and drove the trailer back to the house. Ray and John arrived at our dock about the same time it took me to drive back.

Next project was to move the motorhome out of the driveway to get the boat trailer moved into the garage. Once again Will did the heavy lifting and it is now snug in our garage until the fall. (Will had made more room in that garage by moving all of the left-over wood down to the basement earlier in the week.) We left the motorhome out of the driveway for an extra hour so Will could move the dirt from that side to make accessing the house easier once the motorhome was backed in again. Ray and I had a swim as soon as this was done as it was a scorcher outside of 32C. and very little wind. John stayed on the porch under the umbrella supervising our yard transformation. lol

Ray took John for a short boat ride while I stayed supervising Will. Mostly because it was so hot outside and he works like a Trojan. I was worried he might keel over.

A few dips were had by Ray and I on and off the remainder of the afternoon to stay cool.

By 6pm it was time to come in and have dinner. We all had enough heat today so it was quite enjoyable sitting in our airconditioned house. Another enjoyable day here on the lake.

Thursday morning Ray and I were up early, alas John did not get up until 7:45 am again..... He said he has been sleeping like a rock, the bed so comfy and of course with the benefit of Kristi's portable A/C unit she bought, it was lovely upstairs. As Ray and I retire about 9 - 9:30 ... John stays up to around 11 so we plugged him into the upstair's loft TV.

Thursday morning once everyone was up it was down to the dock for coffee. So flat, calm and peaceful.

I think John enjoyed his stay with us. As today is my birthday, Ray took us all out for breakfast at the Country Grocer Cafe, and then John was on his way back to West Vancouver. A wonderful visit.

We spent the rest of the day supervising the "lads" rebuilding the steps to the beach. Mostly we were making sure they had plenty of ice water to drink and took the appropriate breaks by going for  a swim. With the temps so hot, we didn't want them to have heat exhaustion. Will forgets to take a break and did have some dizziness but is stubborn about stopping. We made him stop at 3:30 for the day instead of 5 pm.

Gazebo Update: Ace finally delivered our gazebo this afternoon. Fortunately the 2 guys were still here working in the yard to help the driver ... it was 375 lbs and there is no way one guy could have moved it. Now is it in the garage awaiting the new dock.

For dinner, Ray took me to the Farm Table Inn a short distance down the highway. We've heard good things about this place and were waiting for an occasion to go.

With a write-up like this, sign me up. Ray and I had a wonderful meal. Although the place did not have air-conditioning, it's location in the trees is very pleasant.

We came early at 5:30 as they were expecting a wedding reception outside on the patio.

For me, Duck Breast with Blueberries.

Lamb Shank for Ray.

We had a fabulous meal, that started out with freshly made herb crusted bread and both of us had an appetizer of scallops with bacon. Yumm.

Ray and I watched the free-range chickens run back and forth, as well as the chef bringing in a bundle of fresh picked herbs.

The chickens even wander around the guests on the patio. lol

After our meal we decided to sit outside for dessert as the inside tables had all filled up and it was quite warm.

A wonderful birthday. Thanks to my fabulous husband. Love you lots.

BC Summer Games and progress on the platform for the gangway.

Kristi and Jason
Image may contain: 2 people, people smiling, people standing, ocean, sky, outdoor, water and nature

This is a fabulous picture of Kristi and Jason on the recent holiday to the Port McNeil area.

Wednesday, up early again and off to Duncan. The new boat needed to go back to the dealer because they installed the drivers seat so far back, Ray could not comfortably reach the steering wheel let alone Kristi or me. So Ray drove the boat over to the launch and I drove around towing the trailer and manged to back it in so he could get onto the trailer. Fortunately we are only spitting distance from the boat launch. Once that was done we headed into Duncan to take the boat back to Monti's and then I drove him across the highway to pick up the motorhome. They ordered the computer board for the jacks, but it will be a week or so before it comes in, so the motorhome comes home.

While Ray took the coach back home I continued on with my shopping trip to Super Store etc. The main reason was going to Home Depot and ordering a gazebo for the dock. With it being mid-summer, summer stuff is being discounted or not in stock anymore and we needed it for the new dock as they will install it for us. The also needed to know the weight so they can block the dock with more support where it will sit. What a process as the only store having the one I wanted was in Victoria and they would not ship it to Duncan. The staff at Duncan worked very hard for over an hour and finally I had purchased the gazebo and they had arranged with ACE Courier to have it delivered to me at the lake. Awesome customer service.

Thursday it was off to Nanaimo for our doctor's appointments and pick up our dining room light fixture from McLaren's Lighting. We had to special order it because having a 30 foot ceiling they had to lengthen the electric wire and chain so it would hang over the table at a proper height. While we were gone the work began on the approach to the gangway for the dock. Another awesome job.

This is built to last. Heavy timbers that will never rot, the decking is Fibreglass with sand painted on that will never rot. Perfect!!! Our next door neighbour came over to have a look and he says his now looks "pitiful" compared to ours. lol Tomorrow they will finish the railings and the transition from this deck to the gangway and then our landscaper Will will get this area filled up with rocks and then the dirt so it is ready for grass seed once the irrigation is fixed.

Starting to look like "Ray's vision".
Thursday night is the opening ceremonies for the BC Summer Games that start here in the Cowichan Valley on Friday morning. The canoe and kayak races will be right in front of our dock! They put out the red buoys Wednesday. Looking forward for our "front row seat". The more "technical" kayak course will be in the Cowichan River.

Friday, the dock guys came first thing and finished the platform for the ramp. Next up was Ray's gardener Will, who spent the day wheeling dirt to back fill the platform. The yard is starting to take shape. I spent a couple of hours watching the kayak/canoe races. It was a bit cool out, only about 22C Other than going to town for my pedicure it was nice to spend the day at home after my busy week. It was a little windy later in the afternoon for the racers ... a few of them tipped over.

Saturday, woke up to clear and sunny skies with no wind. Hopefully it stays this way for the racers. It is supposed to go up to 34C by mid-week. Hot! Hot! Hot! I will be in the lake. :)

Here are some pictures of the racers, taken Friday and Saturday.

Oops... into the water. The RCMP were there for assistance as well.

The Judges

Taking their time getting to the starting line in front of the marina.

Starting Line

Go, go, go!

This group was the fastest of all the races I watched.
Ray walked over to the park next door Saturday morning for these pictures.

Pictures taken from our dock.

Me taking a picture of Ray taking pictures of the races.

At noon Ray's good buddy Martin arrived to spend the day and evening. We have not got together since our Mactush Campsite days when Ray still worked for Western Forest Products. Unfortunately Martin's wife, Suzanne was feeling under the weather so will come for a visit in August instead.

Martin cooling off swimming.

A margarita and sunshine ... what more could you want!

Martin trying out the kayak to get closer to the action.

Martin managed to get up close and personal!

We had a lovely dinner, sat on the deck yakking for a few hours and then it was time for bed. We left Martin watching TV in the loft and Ray and I went to bed. Ray was done in.

Sunday morning we had coffee on the dock and then Eggs Benedict for breakfast. A fabulous visit.

Another fabulous week here in sunny Lake Cowichan.
