Bakersfield, California, Ray one sick puppy.

Tuesday, March 3rd

Moving day. Jacks up and on our way by 10:15 am heading to the Bakersfield River Run RV Park, just off Highway 99. The drive was uneventful climbing up the "Grapevine" on I-5 up to 4144 Ft Elevation.

Lots of produce being picked at this time of year.

This park is very pretty, with green grass and large space between sites. It backs onto the Kern River, which is dry at this time of year. Kind of noisy with the Highway 99 being close and we heard some trains but they did not bother us  ... I put in my ear plugs. lol

Our campsite #62

Campsite views

Campsite views.

View across the Kern River... dry right now with a park on the other side. Great dog walking.
We parked the coach, walked Freya and turned on the A/C. We left Freya and headed out for some lunch. Ray had chosen a Basque Restaurant that had been featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Pyrenees Cafe
Unfussy bar & dining room serving Basque cuisine & American fare, with live music & a patio.

Well ... it was interesting. We had trouble even figuring out how to get inside it! It is an old hotel building in the not so great part of town. Lots of street people.

The unassuming front entrance!

Once we got inside the bar part of the place was so dark we could hardly see, moved into the dining room area which had huge long tables with vinyl table tops ... very ritzy. NOT!

The food was just okay, the ambiance kind of dingy and the price was very expensive. Not something we would recommend.

Back home after I set up the coach and Ray walked Freya again, we sat outside for a couple of hours in the shade as it was quite warm out. Freya had a great time rolling on the very green grass.

The best thing about this rv park, is that they have really good free wifi and I was able to upload a ton of pictures for 2 blog posts and facebook. lol

Wednesday, March 2nd

Well the day started out well, restful morning, and then we left about 10 am to the Kern County Museum. Ray and I just arrived when his stomach felt sick so we turned around and headed back home. Fortunately we were only 15 minutes away.

The rest of the day Ray was quite ill. I think he might have food poisoning. After thinking about it and researching ... it was from the strawberries we had purchased on our way to Malibu. I only ate 2 after we purchased them in the car but Ray age quite a few more over 2 days without washing .... damn Mexicans not washing their hands after you know what. Food poisoning can take 4 to 24 hours. Who knew! He spent the rest of the day in bed ... up and down to the bathroom. Texted Kristi, our doctor daughter for advice... mostly concerned about dehydration. He is to have small sips of juice with salt. One glass over an hour. No food at all until tomorrow. He needs to "poop out" the bad food. lol If he keeps losing fluids from both ends and doesn't pee ... hospital. It seems to have slowed down so we shall see how is tomorrow for our first leg of our journey going back home. The park is full so I don't think staying another day is an option. I know they are full for the weekend. (last episode was at 5:30 pm and he was fine for the rest of the night.)

I have picked out another RV park less than an hour away if necessary. Good thing I put a spare day in our schedule for taking the ferry home to the island. With no snow in the immediate forecast for the Siskiyou Pass so we should be ok losing a day. (Or so we thought!) Foreshadowing!!!

Ray had an uneventful night thankfully, but is really body sore. We will start our journey and if he cannot make it to our destination which is a 3 1/2 hour drive, we will stop.

  1. Sucks to be sick while you're on the road. Get better Ray and wash the damn berries! We even wash them back home before we eat them. We are almost right behind you so clear us a path with that big rig!

  2. Oh no, I hope he is okay. Do not attempt to cross until he is 100% or they will probably quarantine you both to make sure. Once stuck in that spiral it could be a while before you get out... keep us posted.
