Monahans Sandhills State Park, Texas November 3rd and 4th

We were on the road by 9:15 am, a little later than planned but it's shower day. :) Tonight there is a tornado and thunderstorm warning for this area in Texas, so we're happy to move further south. Our first stop will be the city of Lubbock, where we need to get some grocery shopping done and "near beer" for Ray, as this would be the last bigger town for awhile. Of course lunch is on the menu after shopping. We took some small highways through agricultural areas. Lots of cotton fields. Backroad Highways 62 and 385 are smoother and in much better condition than the I-20 for the last miles of today..

Back on the road at 2 pm from Lubbock  and it's another 3 hours before our final destination. We also had to fuel up. ($4.67 for Diesel) Finally we arrived at 5:15 pm. A very long day for us. Fortunately our bellies were still full from our late lunch, so we could just sit outside and relax enjoying the day. Guess what, NO FLIES! Finally!

The drive from Lubbock to Monahans is very flat and boring. Nothing but oil fields with only 1/3 of the "oil donkeys" working. You could smell the oil in the air.

Ray headed out at 7 pm for some "dune shots". The light wasn't quite right for what he wanted.

Sunset pictures looking out our drivers side window that I took with my phone. Gorgeous.

The wind came up pretty strong for a few hours before settling down for the night. Unfortunately tomorrow there is a now a wind warning, the last of the system going though north of us. We may have blowing sand???? Ray will need to get out early in the morning to get any pictures before you can't.

Up early as usual and Ray's out the door the door by 8 am for his morning shots. He lucked out and got some fabulous pictures of the sand dunes. It's so hard to pick which pictures ..... these are only half. :)

By noon the forecasted winds came in so it's an inside day watching the tumbleweeds fly by. Ray took a quick drive back up to the dunes to watch the sand blow in the wind.

This would be a great place for kids to slide down the sand dunes. In the picnic area they have discs you can borrow. The only wildlife we saw was a bunch of quail that came around just before dusk last night.
